La praxi de l’osteopatia craneosacra – Review, adaptation, and prologue to the first Spanish edition by Alberto Panizo

Review, adaptation, and prologue to the first Spanish edition by Alberto Panizo

I have the pleasure of writing the prologue to a new manual by German osteopath Torsten Liem. This is an extraordinary work of research in the field of craniosacral and craniomandibular osteopathy. While his previous work, “Craniosacral Osteopathy” (2002, published by this same publisher), presents a comprehensive basis for the therapy and its foundations, offering clear principles of diagnosis and treatment, this one expands and completes the topic.

Chapter by chapter, he introduces us to each of the bones of the skull and face, their possible dysfunctions, and a wide selection of techniques presented in a very didactic manner. Liem’s broad vision is appreciated, as in his exposition of craniosacral mobility, he covers the different points of view within current currents of craniosacral research and integrates them. The book encompasses both a biomechanical approach, following Dr. Sutherland’s early theories, and a later biodynamic approach, following the work of researchers such as Dr. Rollin Becker, Dr. Jim Jealous, and Dr. Robert Fullford, among others.

Sutherland discovered, in the early 1900s, that the bones of the head had a certain mobility. For the next 50 years, he dedicated his life and clinical work to demonstrating and discovering the implications of this mobility for the human body.

In the later years of his life, he expounded his most advanced theories, introducing the concept of the “breath of life” as the vital force that, in the human system, expresses the inherent principle of order and healing. It can be perceived as a subtle mobility or “tide” throughout the body, forming what he called the “primary respiratory mechanism.” Sutherland placed great importance on enabling the same system to act therapeutically. As Rollin Becker said, the therapist should repair less and actively assist the healing process more. I enthusiastically recommend this work, along with Liem’s previous work. It is extremely useful and supportive, as it provides new insights and impulses, and also serves as a reference work in our therapeutic work. Author: Liem, Torsten.
