“What the heart wants, the mind shows it”
Until now, the wise men said it; now science says it too: it is our thoughts that have largely created and are continuously creating our world. “Today we know that self-confidence, enthusiasm and excitement have the capacity to promote the higher functions of the brain. The prefrontal area of the brain, the place where the most advanced thinking takes place, where our future is invented, where we evaluate alternatives and strategies to solve problems and make decisions, is tremendously influenced by the limbic system, which is our emotional brain. Therefore, what the heart wants to feel, the mind ends up showing it.” This mind must be trained.
“When our brain gives meaning to something, we experience it as absolute reality, without being aware that it is only an interpretation of reality.”
Interview with Dr. Mario Alonso Puig, Specialist in General and Digestive Surgery (source: La Vanguardia, interview by Ima Sanchis).
I am 48 years old. I was born and live in Madrid. I am married and have three children. I am a general and digestive surgeon at the Hospital de Madrid. Flexibility and tolerance must be exercised and developed. You can be very firm with your behavior and kind to people. I am Catholic. I have just published “Madera Líder”.
– More than 25 years working as a surgeon. Conclusion?
-I can testify that an enthusiastic, committed and self-confident person can go much further than what could be expected from their career.
– Psychoneuroimmunobiology?
-Yes, it is the science that studies the connection between thought, speech, mentality and physiology of the human being. A connection that challenges the traditional paradigm. Thought and speech are a form of vital energy that has the ability (and has been sustainably demonstrated) to interact with the organism and produce very profound physical changes.
– What is it about?
-Several studies have shown that one minute of entertaining a negative thought leaves the immune system in a delicate situation for six hours. Distress, this feeling of permanent anxiety, produces very surprising changes in the functioning of the brain and in the hormonal constellation.
– What kind of changes?
-It has the ability to damage memory and learning neurons located in the hippocampus. And it affects our intellectual capacity because it leaves those areas of the brain most necessary for making appropriate decisions without blood supply.
– Do we have resources to combat the inner enemy, or is that something for the wise?
-A valuable resource against worry is to bring attention to abdominal breathing, which alone has the ability to produce changes in the brain. It promotes the secretion of hormones such as serotonin and endorphin and improves the tuning of brain rhythms between the two hemispheres.
– Changing the mind through the body?
-Yes. We need to take the focus of attention away from the thoughts that are disturbing us, causing discouragement, anger or worry, and that make our decisions start from an inadequate point of view. It is smarter, not more reasonable, to bring the focus of attention to the breath, which has the ability to calm our mental state.
– Are you saying that we don’t need to be reasonable?
-We will always find reasons to justify our bad mood, stress or sadness, and this is a certain line of thought. But when we base ourselves on how we want to live, for example without sadness, another line appears. The what and the why are more important than the how. What the heart wants to feel, the mind ends up showing it.
– You exaggerate.
-When our brain gives meaning to something, we experience it as the absolute reality, without being aware that it is only an interpretation of reality.
– More resources….
-Words are a form of vital energy. It has been possible to photograph with positron emission tomography how people who decided to speak to themselves in a more positive way, specifically people with psychiatric disorders, managed to physically remodel their brain structure, precisely the circuits that generated these illnesses.
– Can we change our brain with good words?
-Santiago Ramon i Cajal, Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1906, said a tremendously powerful phrase that at the time we thought was metaphorical. Now we know that it is literal: “Every human being, if he proposes it to you, can be a sculptor of his own brain.”
– Are you sure you are not exaggerating?
-No. According to how we speak to ourselves, we shape our emotions, which change our perceptions. The transformation of the observer (us) alters the observed process. We do not see the world as it is, we see the world as we are.
– Are we talking about philosophy or science?
-Words alone activate the amygdala nuclei. They can activate, for example, the fear nuclei that transform hormones and mental processes. Harvard scientists have shown that when a person manages to reduce this inner cacophony and enter silence, migraines and coronary pain can be reduced by 80%.
– What is the effect of unspoken words?
-We tend to confuse our points of view with the truth, and this is transmitted: perception goes beyond reason. According to studies by Albert Merhabian, from the University of California (UCLA), 93% of the impact of a communication goes below consciousness.
– Why is it so hard for us to change?
-Fear prevents us from leaving our comfort zone, we tend to the security of what is known, and this attitude prevents us from realizing ourselves. To grow, we must leave the zone.
– Most of the acts in our lives are governed by the unconscious.
-We react according to automatisms that we have gradually incorporated. We think that spontaneity is a value;
– Give me a clue.
-Change your thinking habits and train your integrity by honoring your own word.
– See what is there and accept it.
-If we accept ourselves for who we are and what we are not, we can change.
